2026 Winter Sports Season in Review
2026 Winter Sports - Overall: 45-77 (29-47) | .369 (.382)
Boys Basketball | 12-11 (7-5)
EC Boys Basketball had another successful season, finishing the year in the WPIAL Playoffs for the 6th year in a row. Although a 52-50 loss to South Allegheny ended the season earlier than last year, team still proved to be a solid team in the rankings. The Wolverines started the season with two wins in the EC Tipoff Classic while going 1-1 in the PBC HOF Classic games during the season. Ellwood City received the #9 seed where they would be paired up with the defending champions and runner-ups of 3A basketball including Mohawk and South Allegheny. Even with the tough draw, the Wolverines found a way to have success in section play going 7-5 while battling a tough out-of-conference schedule. A Big shout out to the Seniors for the Wolverines - AJ Smith, Aaron Lake, Tyler Smiley, and Jackson Kerr. Smith finished his career with 64 points for the Wolverines, while Smiley finished with 203 and Kerr with 283 points respectively. Aaron Lake finished his career with 975 points, which is 14th best in scoring at EC. Team leaders included Kaleb Servick (18.0 PPG, 5.0 APG, 2.9 SPG), Aaron Lake (10.2 RPG), and Adrian Alvarez (1.2 BPG).
Girls Basketball | 3-19 (2-12)
The Lady Wolveirnes knew the upcoming season would be full of challenges after graduating 6 seniors that even impacted the bench from last season, but that didn’t stop EC from having several meaningful games during the season. The Lady Wolveirnes through all of the tough battles in section play against Beaver Falls, OLSH, Riverside, Mohawk, and Quaker Valley still had a chance late in the season to potentially make playoffs. Unfortunately, the Lady Wolverines came up a little short for playoffs. EC would defeat New Brighton twice on the season for their two section wins while defeating Freedom at home as well. EC played some tough battles down the stretch, including 2-point loss to Mohawk and a battle with Sto-Rox. Carah Kreitzer carried most of the point total, going for 230 points, averaging just over 10 points per game. Jadyn Allwine saw much improvement in the scoring column, finishing the season with 140 points. Up and coming Sophomore Teegan Patterson showed great resilience during the season while tallying 107 points on the season. Congrats to the two Seniors for EC, Ava Lucarelli and Amber McQuistion!
Bowling | Boys: 8-2 Girls: 0-10
What a big return to the wooden floor for the EC bowling team this season! EC Bowling had been disbanded for a couple of seasons, but finally made a big comeback this year, with the boys team making into team playoffs! The boys finished the season 8-2 while the girls were fairly close to breaking through for their first win since coming back. Roster depth was the name of the game for the boys side of things, that included the likes of Brendan Allison, Briar McNeeley, Colby Moyer, and Adam Zikeli one of the two Seniors on the team! Ethan Stoker also added depth from the Senior position and would relieve a couple of the players during the season in section matchups. Once again a great season was had by the boys who would send the team to WPIBL playoffs while also seeing individual success from Zikeli, Moyer, Allison, and McNeeley. On the girls side, the battle was trying to find depth while getting experience. The girls only bowled with four individuals, which meant they were at a disadvantage in terms of scoring with five possible scorers for each team. But that didn’t stop the success on the year as Charlotte Eller would pave the way for the girls! Chloe DiCerbo, Hailey Hardisky, and Lily Marthens carried the load during the season, coming up short in a couple matches to make things interesting in section play. Charlotte Eller would also join the individuals that made their mark in WPIBL playoffs, as the boys and girls teams would come home with some hardware and medals. The future looks bright for the team going forward!
Wrestling | 7-8 (2-2)
Wrestling finished the season 7-8 with a fairly competitive schedule while trying to fill holes left behind by several key seniors from last year. A tough battle against Knoch to start the season kind of set the tone for playoffs, but the Wolverines battled throughout the season. EC would defeat North Catholic and Summit Academy in section play, while having a great Senior Night against the innagural season of Mohawk wrestling. The Wolverines were led by Seniors Cheyenne Berglund, Nathan Chandler, and Gavin McClure who battled during the season for a combined record of 50-48. EC finished with an individual record of 141-157 with a 30th place finish at the Hickory Invitational, 14th place finish at Penn Hills Holiday Classic, and 16th place at the MAC Wrestling Tournament.
Ice Hockey | 7-12-0-1 (5-7-0-0)
Fun, thrilling, and full of enjoyment was the season of the Wilmington Greyhounds as quoted by one of the Seniors Tye Tomak. The Greyhounds showed much success this season, including a similar scenario of that of the girls basketball team - a chance at playoffs late in the season. Althgouh Wilmington missed out in playoffs, finishing in fifth place just outside of the fourth and final spot, the team had success and more importantly fun on the ice. Great games were had by the team, including goaltender combo Craig Patterson and Connor Michaels, both representing EC Blue and White! Patterson also was able to record his 1,000th plus save in his career! Meanwhile leading point scorer was Brody Young along with Alex Rodgers, Beckett Miller, and Anthony Popovich, representing the co-sponsored team fairly well. But more importantly, the Wilmington Greyhounds did something they haven’t done in 12 games - defating the Neshannock Lancers 5-3 during the season. What a great season for the Greyhounds as they continued to have success on and off the ice.
Bocce | 1-4-1 (Team 1: 3-5 Team 2: 2-6)
Bocce continues to be a strong point for Ellwood City, building relationships and great experiences along the way. Although this year did not see the Wolverines move onto into playoffs and battle against other Lawrence County teams, the group had fun and enjoyed the ride during the season. Team 1 finished with a 3-5 record while Team 2 finished the season 2-6. Captains for the teams included Quinn Smith, Izzy Contino, Paxton Christofferson, and Meredith McCommons. EC defeated Union 3 matches to 1 to start the season while tying a really good squad for Shenango 2-2. Unfortunately the Riv-Ell Cup match was won by the Panthers 2-0, but EC will be back in action next season looking for some redemption!
