Softball Clinches Playoffs, Baseball still has work to do

The Lady Wolverines pulled off a shutout against Hopewell (9-0 win) this past week to finish their conference play record at 7-3 and an overall record of 10-5 coming into this week. With that being said, the Lady Wolverines have clinched the third seed from 3A Section 2 for softball and will be looking to do some damage in the playoffs. Ellwood City has two more games on their schedule, both being out of conference games and teams from New Castle - New Castle on Tuesday and Neshannock on Wednesday, both being host by the Wolverines. After that, the Lady Wolverines will look towards the pairings show that will be projecting playoffs for the following week. We will post the moment that these pairings are released on our site with dates, times, and locations of the opening round of playoffs. You can check out their schedule, results, and stats on our softball page, or by visiting their MaxPreps page.

  1. 16-1 (9-1) Avonworth Antelopes *

  2. 10-4 (8-2) Beaver Bobcats *

  3. 10-5 (7-3) Ellwood City Wolverines *

  4. 6-8 (4-6) North Catholic Trojans *

  5. 4-9 (2-8) Hopewell Vikings

  6. 1-11 (0-10) Beaver Falls Tigers

The Wolverines had a tough split last week, pulling off an upset against Freedom on Monday (5-4), while losing to Beaver Falls on Wednesday (10-2). 3A Section 2 playoff projections are not as clear as softball as there are mathematically five teams still alive for two spots. Ellwood City is one of them, and may actually have one of the easiest tracks to playoffs - win both games this week and you are in. The Wolverines have had their ups-and-downs during the season, and looking how the pattern has gone, this week should be on the rise. The Wolverines play Shady Side Academy today at 4:30 (Home) and will finish conference play this coming Wednesday at North Catholic 7:30 PM. Both games can be watched live stat stream via our GameChanger account. The other teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs are Freedom (4-5), Beaver Falls (4-5), North Catholic (3-6), and Shady Side Academy (2-8). [UPDATE] - Via Beaver County Times post this weekend, there is a chance that a Beaver Falls win over Hopewell two weeks ago will become a forfeit due to the Tigers going over their required pitch limit. This comes in as the third possible game to be forfeited due to pitch count issues. The issue stems from the PIAA changing the pitch count from 100 to 105…for playoffs. Apparently some chapter meetings and conferences before the season started this was not addressed properly and coaches and teams are up in arms over the number. But it’s clearly stated on the PIAA site that the pitch count is 100 and 105 for playoffs. Also, The Trib High School Sports Network reported such numbers during this past summer in an article. The battle for playoffs begins this week.
