EC Baseball & Softball Season Updates


EC Baseball & Softball looking to make second-half run

Both Baseball and Softball have had games postponed or cancelled during the 2018-2019 campaign, however, both teams have been able to get several games under their belts and are looking to middle of the season to gain positioning on the rest of their respectable sections.

Both sports for Ellwood City play in 3A Section 2, which contains several powerhouse teams. For baseball, success comes from Hopewell and Freedom along with a competitive New Brighton team. For softball, it’s all about the Antelopes of Avonworth who are hot once again, starting the season 10-0 (4-0) along with a competitive Beaver team.

But just outside of those teams, are both Ellwood Baseball & Softball. EC Baseball to date is 2-5 (1-3) sitting in sixth place, a game back of fourth. EC softball is 5-4 (2-2) sitting in third place, looking to make another playoff run.

Baseball continues its season this Saturday at noon (Home) against Union (non-conference) while softball plays tomorrow (Home) against Hopewell (tentative for 6:30 PM). Below are some highlights and stats from the season so far.

EC Baseball

  • Ricky Pitrelli (Sr.) has been tearing the cover off the ball, batting .556 on the year (10-18). This is coming after Pitrelli batted a solid .310 (9-29) last year. Pitrelli also has 10 RBI along with 5 doubles so far on the season.

  • Sam DiCaprio (So.) is batting .273 (6-22) on the season while also adding 5 RBIs. DiCaprio also pitches for EC, posting 3 K’s on the year so far.

  • Primary pitcher Ryan Hampton (So.) is posting a solid 3.89 ERA with 2 wins to go along with 9 K’s on the season.

  • CF starter Joey Rush (Sr.) is posting a 1.000 fielding percentage where he has 15 total putouts.

  • SS/2B starter Brady Welsh (Sr.) adds speed to the field as he has 6 of the 16 stolen bases for the Wolverines this season.

EC Softball

  • Anna Ferrucci (Sr.) is riding a .500 batting average so far this season (15-30) after .491 last year. For her career, Ferrucci is .473 with the Wolverines (95-201).

  • Ariana Garroway (Sr.) is also posting a solid batting campaign of .455 (10-22) while also driving in 6 runs. Garroway has 4 doubles along with a grand slam so far on the year.

  • Maria Ioanilli (So.) adds a .407 batting average to the lineup (11-27), but more importantly has knocked in 12 runs so far this year, including 2 home runs.

  • Natalia Greco (Sr.) is showing strength in the field as she is a perfect 14-14 on fielding opportunities, posting a 1.000 fielding percentage including a double play.

  • Angie Nardone (Fr.) brings youth to the field for the Wolverines as she has jumped into a starting role at pitcher. Nardone is 2-1 on the season, posting a 2.85 ERA with 39 total K’s to date.
