Lady Wolverines claim first game of rivalry week, beat Panthers 42-31
Lady Wolverines use defense in second half to defeat the Panthers by 11
The first match-up of “Rivalry Week” concluded last night as the Ellwood City Wolverines Girls Basketball team took to the court against rival “across the creek” Riverside Panthers in a huge 3A Section 1 Conference game.
The Lady Wolverines came into the game as favorites to win based upon their season play, but no one overlooks a rivalry game. Ellwood City did not overlook the Panthers at all, taking a 22-17 lead into halftime. The Panthers were able to keep the game close in the first half, but could not prevail on offense in second half, only scoring 14 points between the third and fourth quarter, while the Wolverines posted 20 second half points to push the lead to double digits at the final buzzer, 42-31.
Leading scorer on the night was Senior Isabella Roth who posted 15 points including 12 points in the first half, all via 3-point attempts. Also chipping in on the evening was Chloe Sturgeon who posted 8 points off the bench. Maria Ioanilli added 7 points all coming from the second half. Kyla Servick finished with 6 points of her own including clutch free throws down the stretch.
Ellwood City held the Panthers to just one field goal in the third quarter and 7 for the entire game.
The Lady Wolverines improve to 8-5 (3-4) on the season and will look to another home game this coming Wednesday as they take on non-conference foe Union 1-11 (1-5) before heading back next week to conference play.
