Week Zero Matchups - Local Area and Regional Games
If you like High School Football and want some great matchups for the first week in Western Pennsylvania...you have to read this!
Pennsylvania High School football has always been a big topic when talking about high school sports to the point where PA is in the discussion with California, Texas, and Florida sports. This year during Week Zero, PA will prove no different - Almost 10 games this week alone in Western PA will feature teams traveling to other state teams, from Florida, Ohio, and the D.C. area.
With this in mind, the W-Zone will be featuring local area games this year while also checking in on the regional list of games as well for Week Zero. Below are the matchups for local and regional games.
Local Area / 2A Midwestern Conference / Ellwood City Schedule Team Games
- Avonworth @ Neshannock
- Carrick @ Brentwood
- Ellwood City @ Beaver Falls
- Hopewell @ Freedom
- Laurel @ Mohawk
- New Brighton @ Rochester
- Serra Catholic @ Yough
- Summit Academy @ Western Beaver (SAT)
- Union @ Shenango (SAT)
- Shaler @ New Castle
Team Notes: Neshannock will look to build on last year's success in the 2A Midwestern conference. Brentwood is one of the Wolverine's out of conference games that will take place in the last week of the season. Beaver Falls, the Wolverines first opponent, is trying to bounce back after just 2-years removed from a WPIAL and State championship while winning only one game last season. Freedom looks to start off early again in 2A football as they travel out of classification to take on Hopewell, a 3A team they defeated 7-3 last year. Laurel was the Wolverine's first and only scrimmage team while Mohawk has been considered a potential playoff team in 2A with the new format of top four teams make playoffs. New Brighton will look to improve from last year after not making the playoffs as they have a stingy defense while running the Wing-T offense. Serra Catholic is the other Wolverines non-conference game in Week 1 where they support a fairly small roster, but talented roster. Western Beaver is a new conference opponent this year for the Wolverines as they have a cooperative sponsorship with Lincoln Park (NOTE - Week 5 Ellwood City @ Western Beaver is a Saturday 12PM game). Shenango is the other new conference opponent that the Wolverines will face during the season as the Wildcats have a new coach at hand from last year's playoff run. New Castle looks to improve upon last year's season and will look to beat Shaler once again to start the season.

Wow...what a Week Zero matchup to start the list - powerhouse Pittsburgh Central Catholic playing host to Erie Cathedral Prep where both teams are regulars in making the state championships. The big talk this past week has been the hype for the Pine-Richland vs. IMG Academy Florida team - IMG is a HUGE academy team from Florida that is usually televised on a weekly basis. Unfortunately this week they won't be televised, but some big talk is coming from the game. Ohio has always been just as big as PA High School football and sure enough a great test comes between the two - Penn Hills @ Steubenville...aka the Big Red. Anyone hear of COF Academy aka Christians of Faith Academy from Ohio? Hopefully that's a big no...because it's a brand new school this year. North Allegheny will play host to COF Academy who has the likes of other big teams like IMG and Bishop Gorman from Nevada. Canada eh? Yes...that's right a High school football team from Canada makes the trip to Peters Township. Tusca...what? Tuscarawas Central Catholic from Ohio travels to Greensburg Central Catholic in the battle of Central Catholic schools. Three teams from D.C. and a team from West Virginia rounds out the most exotic, out-of-state matchups that the WPIAL has seen most likely...ever! Bring on Week Zero as we here at the W-Zone are ready to bring the action to you!
