W-Zone Week 1 Predictions

We're back!!! The W-Zone fresh off a great season last year is ready to preview each week of play in the WPIAL as well as make bold predictions of big-time games!

First, check out the 2017 "Episode 1" audio edition of the W-Zone where we preview EC football, the Beaver Valley Conference, and tomorrow's week 1 match-up versus Central Valley Warriors (0-1). Check out the episode here! [CLICK HERE]

Alright, time to get down to business. Last year, the W-Zone predicted all the local games in the Beaver and Lawrence County area as well as the playoff games, finishing with a stout correct pick percentage of 78%. This year we do the same - we will predict each of the local games and hopefully do better than last year! So here we go! [PREDICTION WINNER]

4A Games

  • Montour @ New Castle: Montour brings back quality starters as New Castle looks to bounce back after losing to Aliquippa in week 0. Look for New Castle to do such, as New Castle pulls away late to beat Montour. [NEW CASTLE]

3A Games

  • Valley @ Keystone Oaks: Both Valley and KO were decent teams last year in a great 3A class. KO put up points last year as Valley leaned on their defense during the season. Give KO the edge as they should score points in bunches. [KEYSTONE OAKS]
  • Beaver Falls @ Aliquippa: After last week's shutout vs. New Castle, expect Aliquippa to come out prepared for last year's WPIAL / PIAA 3A champ. I like Aliquippa at home convincingly. [ALIQUIPPA]
  • Central Valley @ Ellwood City: Central Valley brings back 88% of their offense from last year; however were shut out last week versus South Fayette. Ellwood looks to build from last year as new head coach Nick Hand takes over. CV's offense pulls away in the second half. [CENTRAL VALLEY]
  • Derry @ Elizabeth Forward: Derry was last year's cinderella team as Derry finished 11-1, losing to Aliquippa in the semi-finals last year. EF looks to continue to build. Give Derry the edge as they look to move to 2-0 on the season. [DERRY]

2A Games

  • Mohawk @ Laurel: Mohawk has made strides last year. Laurel looked awful in its week zero game losing to Union. I expect the woes to continue for Laurel as Mohawk pulls out a victory very late in the game. [MOHAWK]
  • Neshannock @ Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic: Neshannock continues its success as new coaches, new players and transfers hurt CWNC's success. [NESHANNOCK]
  • South Side Beaver @ New Brighton: South Side looks to build from last year's success. New Brighton has a young team and young starting roster. I expect experience to be key as South Side wins the fourth quarter. [SOUTH SIDE BEAVER]

1A Games

  • Rochester @ Shenango: A good match-up here in 1A. Rochester looks to be competitive and Shenango looks to get back to winning games. Expect a back-and-forth game. [ROCHESTER]
  • Union @ Sto-Rox: Union looks to build off of week zero's win against Laurel; however, Sto-Rox proves to be a test late in the game. [STO-ROX]

Non-Conference Games

  • Beaver @ Freedom: Beaver put up 69 points in week zero. Freedom has looked better each year recently. No Darius Wise...no problem. Beaver spots a bunch of points. Expect a blowout early. [BEAVER]
  • Burrell @ Hopewell: Toss up here. Hopewell's roster is very young with some talent. Burrell played better late in the season last year. Expect back-and-forth play throughout the game. [HOPEWELL]
  • McGuffey @ Quaker Valley: Points were scored during week zero for Quaker Valley. Ricky Guss was on fire scoring 3 TDs via the run and throwing for 3 more. Expect the same. Blowout for Quaker Valley. [QUAKER VALLEY]
  • Riverside @ Steel Valley: Another great team to talk about from last year...Steel Valley. They say speed and skills kill. That describes Steel Valley. SV does lose some starters, but expect them to be back at it again. Steel Valley wins convincingly. [STEEL VALLEY]
