WPIAL A-6A Match-ups and W-Zone Predictions

It's the third week of playoffs for WPIALs as some teams are going for championships and others are trying to make it to the final game for WPIALs. Below is a list of the match-ups for A-6A. 3A-6A championships will be played tomorrow (Saturday) at Heinz Field with a clean new field after the Steelers' Thursday night game. A and 2A play their semifinals tonight at 7:30PM and then will have the championship games next Saturday at RMU.

6A Championship

  • #1 Pine-Richland (12-0) vs. #2 Pittsburgh Central Catholic (10-2)

#1 seed Pine-Richland is coming off a dominant win over a good quality team in North Allegheny 49-25. #2 seed Central Catholic came off a tough defensive battle against Penn Hills and held on late to win the game 17-8. Pine-Richland boasts a crazy good offense with Notre Dame commit Phil Jurkovec at the quarterback position playing amazing. PCC will have to rely on the offense finishing drives and chewing up the clock. They will also have to rely on the defense to try and stop the Rams. Don't expect that to happen. Pine-Richland in a cruising game.

Prediction: #1 Pine-Richland

5A Championship

  • #1 Penn-Trafford (11-1) vs. #2 Gateway (11-1)

#1 seed Penn-Trafford is coming in looking good after bruising up Upper St. Clair 35-14. #2 Seed Gateway pulled out a good victory late against McKeesport. Penn-Trafford has a good offense with a stingy defense, holding opponents to minimal points on the scoreboard. Gateway will have to lean on a freshman running back in Derrick Davis and Quarterback Brady Walker to make this game different from the previous match-up which was in favor of Penn-Trafford 28-0 in September. It's tough to beat a team twice in a season, but that is exactly what the W-Zone expects.

Prediction: #1 Penn-Trafford

4A Championship

  • #4 Montour (9-2) vs. #3 Thomas Jefferson (10-1)

#4 Montour pulled another crazy upset over #1 seed South Fayette for another comeback win in the two weeks of playoffs. #3 Thomas Jefferson blanked #2 seed Belle Vernon as 4A is the only class not featuring a #1-#2 seed match-up for the title (excluding A and 2A yet). Montour has been playing well in comeback games; however, Thomas Jefferson has pulled out big leads early to make their playoff run simple in the second half. Expect Thomas Jefferson to strike early with a tough, boisterous front offensive line.

Prediction: #3 Thomas Jefferson

3A Championship

  • #1 Aliquippa (12-0) vs. #2 Quaker Valley (11-1)

What everyone wanted...a Beaver Valley Conference match-up in the final for 3A. Just goes to prove even more the toughness that is the BVC. #1 Aliquippa pulled out a great victory against Beaver 14-7 in the last four minutes of the game. Aliquippa will have to play without their starting quarterback all year as the back-up stepped in and started last week. #2 Quaker Valley comes in after crushing foe Seton LaSalle 40-7 as well as the regular season 42-7. Ricky Guss has been great all season long and continues to make his team better each week. The last time these teams matched up the Quips held a small 14-7 lead until late scoring in the fourth quarter winning 22-7. If, and I mean if, the Quakers are able to score early, I like their chances to keep pace and play decent upfront. However, I do not see how the Quips finish the season at Heinz Field again. Either way this will hands down be the best match-up at the field tomorrow.

Prediction: #1 Aliquippa

2A Semifinals

  • #1 Steel Valley (10-0) vs. #4 Riverside (9-2)

#1 Steel Valley shut out Burgettstown 42-0. #4 Riverside beat Avonworth 42-14 easily. Both teams have played well all year with minimal blemishes along the journey. These teams met last year with Steel Valley cruising to a big victory. Expect Riverside to not be blanked tonight. However, Steel Valley has some crazy skill players that cannot be stopped. W-Zone likes Steel Valley in the fourth quarter.

Prediction: #1 Steel Valley

  • #2 Washington (11-0) vs. #3 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (10-2)

#2 Washington has been blasting teams of late, winning last week 54-7 over East Allegheny. #3 CWNC moved past Serra Catholic 35-14. Washington has been average over 40 points a game and has not been stopped on the offensive side. CWNC will have its hands full of players moving the ball. Expect this game to be over at half, in favor of Washington.

Prediction: #2 Washington

A Semifinals

  • #1 California (12-0) vs. #4 Imani Christian (10-2)

#1 California pulled away from an early 13-0 deficit to Union to win big time in the second half 43-19. #4 Imani Christian held on late to beat OLSH 20-12. Expect California to come out early and put up points to prove worthy of that number one seed. Imani as the victor would be a huge upset.

Prediction: #1 California

  • #2 Clairton (9-2) vs. #3 Jeanette (11-1)

#2 Clairton beat Carmichaels 37-12 to improve to 9-2 on the season. #3 Jeanette beat Rochester on late heroics 30-26 and are lucky to be in the semifinals. Jeanette has been really good against all teams that aren't named...Clairton. Only one loss to a team in the past couple years not named Clairton. Against Clairton? 0-6. Expect that number to go up by one as Clairton beats Jeanette (not as bad as the regular season) in simple fashion.

Prediction: #2 Clairton
